what is reiki

Reiki is a Japanese, energy healing practice that supports the restoration of physical, mental and spiritual balance. Gentle hand placements are applied either on, or just above the body, while the receiver is laid down, fully clothed. As the subtle flow of energy is re-balanced, you may experience feelings of warmth, tingling, moments of insight, or simply a deep sense of relaxation.  The different sensations people experience are endless, and often vary from session to session.

As a holistic therapy, Reiki naturally seeks to balance our entire system, offering support no matter what the individual needs are at the time. It has the capacity to guide us into a deep meditative state, helping to alleviate stress, boost energy levels, and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Emotional barriers or behaviour patterns that limit our capacity to live happy, fulfilling lives can be brought to the surface and released, helping us reconnect with ourselves and the world around us. Once the body has been restored to a state of balance, it becomes easier to make healthy lifestyle choices and approach everyday challenges with a refreshing sense of ease.

Our bodies have an innate ability to self-heal, but this is only possible when relaxed. In modern culture, we tend to spend most of our time in sympathetic nervous system functioning, our ‘fight or flight’ response to the stresses of day-to-day events. When we live in this constant state of ‘coping’ it can lead to emotional imbalances and physical disease.

The application of Reiki therapy has been observed to activate our parasympathetic nervous system, sometimes referred to as our ‘rest and digest’ mode. When our bodies are in this state, it encourages muscle relaxation, a decrease in heart rate and respiration, stabilisation of blood sugar levels, and regulation of our digestive systems and sleep patterns.
